Jim McAnaney devoted twenty-six years of his life to public health. He began his Health Department career in New York City as a Centers for Disease Control Program Representative assigned to the Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Program. He was transferred to Philadelphia in 1985, where he was responsible for laboratory-based surveillance of the STD Program. In July 1987 he was hired by the Philadelphia Department of Public Health to work in the AIDS Activities Coordinating Office as a Disease Investigator in the AIDS Surveillance Unit. One year later he was promoted to Disease Surveillance Program Supervisor within the same unit. In this position Jim developed the unit’s goals and objectives, and was responsible for developing evaluation strategies for AIDS reporting. In November 1998 he became the Manager of the AIDS Surveillance Program. In this position, he oversaw millions of federal grant dollars for HIV/AIDS surveillance and public health research, which has aided in the prevention and treatment of HIV and AIDS in the Philadelphia area. He personally hired all twenty-eight current staff members of the Philadelphia HIV/AIDS Surveillance Program. For all of them Jim was not just their boss. He was a friend.
